Summer holidays cost on average 30% more than pre-Covid, says Codacons

Rome, Aug. 12 (LaPresse) – “Summer holidays, including transport, accommodation, and related services, cost on average 30% more than in the pre-Covid era, an increase in spending that has profoundly changed Italians’ habits,” said consumer group Codacons, which compared current prices with those of 2019 based on Istat data. “The sharpest increases have hit the air transport sector,” the association notes. “Today, domestic flights cost on average 81.5% more than in the same period six years ago, and European flights are up 67.8%. Ferry prices have risen by 13.9% over the same period, train fares by 10.7%, and bus and coach fares by 10.1%. Renting a car is 21.6% more expensive.” “Those who opt for a package holiday now spend 56.6% more than before Covid, and staying away from home also means facing the price hikes of accommodation facilities: hotel and motel rates have increased by 42.6% over the same period, holiday villages and campsites are up 12.7%, and B&Bs, holiday homes, and other types of lodging are up 22.7%,” the statement continues. “Dining out at a restaurant or pizzeria costs 22.5% more this summer,” the association adds.
