Tariffs, Gentiloni: ‘Agreement with the US not good for the EU and Italian economies’

Milan, 5 September (LaPresse) – The agreement with the US on tariffs ‘is not a good agreement, honestly, even though I understand those who say that Ukraine, the US contribution to European defence and Kiev were also on the negotiating table, and therefore raising our voice could have had negative consequences’. This was stated by former Italian Prime Minister and European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni in an interview with TgCom24 on the sidelines of The European House Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio. ‘But if we isolate the issue of tariffs,’ Gentiloni added, ‘we now find ourselves with very high tariffs that will damage some sectors of the Italian and European economies.’ What is worrying, Gentiloni added, ‘is not only the economic consequences of these decisions, which will perhaps be more serious in the US than in Europe, but understanding the stability of these agreements. Do we agree that there will be no second thoughts?’
