Gaza strike, CGIL: ‘More than 2 million people in over 100 squares’

Rome, 3 October (LaPresse) – "Today's mobilisation was a success: more than 2 million people took to the streets to participate in marches that took place in over 100 Italian cities for the national general strike in defence of the Flotilla, constitutional values, to stop genocide and in support of the people of Gaza. Three hundred thousand people marched through the streets of the capital.‘ This was announced by the CGIL in a statement, emphasising that ’according to the data received so far, the average national participation in the general strike stands at around 60%." The union emphasised that “the day was characterised by a peaceful and democratic atmosphere, and the general secretary of the CGIL highlighted 'the extraordinary and unprecedented participation of young people, who are calling for a future of peace and social justice, with stable employment and an end to precariousness”. ‘Workers, citizens and students made their voices heard in support of the Global Sumud Flotilla and in solidarity with the arrested activists, for peace and to reaffirm international law. The mobilisation,’ concludes the CGIL, ‘does not stop here. The next event will be in Rome for the national demonstration on 25 October, “Democracy at work”.’
