Strike for Gaza, Fiom-Cgil: ‘Very high participation, reaching 80%’

Rome, 3 October (LaPresse) – ‘Very high participation by metalworkers in the general strike called by the Cgil for today.’ This was stated in a note by the national Fiom-Cgil. ‘Thousands went on strike and demonstrated throughout Italy to support the Global Sumud Flotilla and to stop the genocide of the Palestinian people. The participation figures for workers are extraordinary,’ the statement reads. ‘In some companies, participation in the general strike exceeded 80%.’ ‘Israel's violation of international law is of unprecedented gravity: it was an attack on the constitutional order to prevent humanitarian and solidarity action towards the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip,’ continued Fiom-Cgil. The Italian government should do what it has not done so far: vote for sanctions against Benjamin Netanyahu, block trade and military agreements with Israel and recognise the State of Palestine.‘ ’Workers have given a great demonstration of democracy by fighting for peace, humanity and dignity," it concludes.
