Antitrust: ‘There is no collusion or profiling regarding high flight prices in Sicily and Sardinia’

Rome, 11 December (LaPresse) – ‘Overall, therefore, the analysis conducted on the domestic routes to and from Sicily and Sardinia did not reveal any critical competitive issues in relation to the functioning of pricing algorithms or actual price dynamics that would suggest, at this stage, collusion between airlines that could be subject to antitrust measures, confirming the results of the aforementioned I863 proceedings.’ This was stated by Guido Stazi, Secretary General of the Italian Competition and Market Authority (AGCM), during a hearing before the parliamentary committee on combating the disadvantages of insularity. ‘The analysis carried out did not substantially reveal the adoption of customer “profiling” practices aimed at personalising prices based on the type of device, operating system and user browsing history,’ he continued. The Authority, also in light of the findings of proceeding I863 and in order to intercept any changes in competitive dynamics that could undermine the need for interconnection between different areas of the country, is concluding its IC56 fact-finding investigation into pricing algorithms in passenger air transport on domestic routes to and from Sicily and Sardinia, which is scheduled to close on 31 December 2025.
