Fuel: Government considers extending excise duty cut, awaiting inflation figures

Rome, 30 March (LaPresse) – Fuel remains under the government’s scrutiny, as it closely monitors price trends and any potential issues or speculation, and is considering extending the excise duty cut. This morning, the average ‘self-service’ price – recorded by the Mimit observatory – across the national road network was essentially stable, at €1.746 per litre for petrol and €2.055 per litre for diesel. On the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is €1.813 for petrol and €2.118 for diesel. The situation risks becoming more complicated from next week onwards: next Tuesday, 7 April, the government’s excise duty cut is due to expire. Without the renewal of the measure, Codacons calculates that the average price of diesel will rise above the average of €2.30 per litre on the ordinary network, and petrol to €1.99. This is why, as majority sources explain to LaPresse, in the absence of a resolution to the Iranian conflict, the government is preparing to renew the intervention with a Council of Ministers meeting to be convened immediately after Easter Monday.
