Excise Duty Decree: new extension of price cuts until 6 June, 5 cents for petrol and 10 cents for diesel

Rome, 22 May (LaPresse) – The Excise Duty Decree Quater, approved this evening by the Council of Ministers, revises the excise duty rates on petrol, diesel, LPG and natural gas used as motor fuels, as well as on HVO and biodiesel, for the period from 23 May to 6 June 2026, confirming the reductions already applied previously: approximately 5 cents per litre for petrol and 10 cents (rpt 10 cents) per litre for diesel. This was announced by Palazzo Chigi in the final statement of the Council of Ministers. Furthermore, the tax credit for road haulage operators to cover the higher fuel costs incurred between March and June 2026 has been extended to June 2026, with a total expenditure limit of €300 million, including the €100 million already allocated for the same purpose by Decree-Law No. 33 of 2026. A tax credit of up to 30 per cent of expenditure incurred is introduced for the purchase of agricultural fertilisers in March, April and May 2026, subject to a maximum limit of €40 million, granted in accordance with the Temporary Framework for State Aid adopted by the European Commission on 29 April 2026 in response to the crisis in the Middle East. The subsidy for the purchase of diesel for agricultural use is also extended, with a total budget of €90 million, including the €30 million already allocated for the same purpose by previous measures.
