Cinema: Claudia Cardinale has died at 87

Rome, Sept. 23 (LaPresse) – Claudia Cardinale has died at the age of 87. She had been ill for some time. She was the muse of directors such as Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini, and Luigi Comencini, and was famously known as “Italy’s sweetheart.”

Claudia Cardinale, born in Tunis in 1938, was one of the great icons of European cinema. Unforgettable in Visconti’s The Leopard and Fellini’s 8½, she left a lasting impression on an entire generation of cinephiles with her beauty and intensity.

During her long career, which began in the mid-1950s and spanned over sixty years, she acted in a wide range of film genres. From Italian comedies to spaghetti westerns, from dramatic to historical films, and even Hollywood productions. She occasionally worked in music, theater, and television as well.

She took part in more than 150 films, some of which are considered milestones of auteur cinema.
