Energy: Pichetto, we are evaluating measures to avoid early coal phase-out

Milan, 24 December (LaPresse) – "At the end of the year, the environmental authorisation for coal-fired power generation at the Civitavecchia and Brindisi power plants will expire. This step confirms, in line with the provisions of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, the path towards phasing out coal-fired power generation in Italy. It is a clear and established objective of Italy's energy strategy, in line with European commitments and the transition towards a more sustainable system. At the same time, however, we are carefully evaluating the possibility and methods of intervention that would allow us to avoid early decommissioning of the plants compared to what might be strategically appropriate: the government's priority is to ensure the security of the national electricity system and continuity of supply, in a context still characterised by significant uncertainty. As Mase, we will continue to work closely with other institutional players and industry operators, in compliance with the regulatory framework and decarbonisation targets, ensuring a balance between environmental sustainability, energy security and the protection of our production system'. This was stated by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto.
