Cancer deaths decline in Italy, but southerners flee for breast surgery

Milan, 18 December. (LaPresse) – In 2025, there are an estimated 390,000 new cases of cancer in Italy, a stable number compared to 2024, but the positive news is that in 10 years there will be 9% fewer deaths: the decline in deaths is even more evident in lung cancer (-24%) and colorectal cancer (-13%). These figures are better than the European average and translate into a higher 5-year survival rate. However, a critical issue emerges: in the south, 15% of patients move to another region for breast surgery, reaching almost 50% of operations outside the region in the case of Calabria. This emerges from the report “Cancer figures in Italy 2025” by the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (Aiom).
