Milan, Jan. 26 (LaPresse) – Osapp denounced the still serious situation in the Turin juvenile prison, also denounced yesterday at the opening of the judicial year. ‘The Turin juvenile prison is now a symbol of the management disaster that afflicts the Italian juvenile prison system. For too long, inmates have been forced to sleep on the floor on plastic cots, in unacceptable conditions of degradation. The facility houses 55 detainees, well over its capacity of 46 places, 7 detainees sleep on beach cots, yet the Department of Juvenile and Community Justice, seems to show no interest in solving this serious emergency,’ reads a note. ‘Prison police personnel, forced to work in these unbearable conditions, are continually put to the test. For the umpteenth time, Osapp, is clamouring for the immediate resignation of the head of the Department of Juvenile Justice.’ Osapp Secretary General Leo Beneduci states: ‘We strongly urge Minister Nordio and Undersecretary Ostellari to intervene without further delay, putting an end to a situation that has been going on for too long and is undermining the dignity and safety of those who work and those who are deprived of their liberty. This situation is intolerable and we cannot allow it to continue. It is time to act'.
