Rome, May 25 (LaPresse) – The climate crisis is accelerating in 2025, with a significant rise in extreme weather events. According to the Città Clima Observatory by Legambiente, 110 such events have been recorded in Italy so far this year (as of mid-May). This message is being spread by over 300 young activists gathered today in Paestum (Salerno).
Legambiente reports that extreme events have increased by 31% compared to the same period in 2024, which saw 84 events. The most frequent types of events include flooding from heavy rainfall (34), wind damage (23), and river overflows (14).
These figures, says Legambiente, demonstrate "the inadequacy of current mitigation and adaptation policies" and the urgent need for a change of course.
The young activists formed a human chain on the beach of Paestum's dune oasis to send a "clear and unequivocal message: to tackle the climate crisis, cut energy bills, and create green jobs, an immediate and concrete response is needed from the Meloni government and the Regions. Stop fossil fuels, start renewables."
This symbolic action is part of Legambiente’s Youth Climate Meeting 2025, aimed at drawing public and institutional attention to the need to speed up the ecological transition.
