Milan, June 25 (LaPresse) – “A 22-year-old non-EU national hanged himself Monday morning in Milan’s San Vittore prison. He was immediately rescued and taken to the hospital in critical condition but died last night. This is the 36th suicide of an inmate since the beginning of the year, in addition to two staff members, victims of a de facto death penalty that strikes randomly, regardless of the crime committed or even the fact that one is serving the State. Inmates and staff alike are united by the ongoing trampling of the rule of law, which subjects the former to widely illegal and often inhumane detention conditions and the latter to working conditions unworthy of a republic that bases its democracy on labor,” said Gennarino De Fazio, General Secretary of Uilpa Penitentiary Police. “There are 16,000 inmates beyond prison capacity and 18,000 staff missing in the penitentiary police, increasingly depleted in prisons due to the massive and inappropriate assignments of officers to ministerial and extrapenitentiary offices. Tangible and immediate interventions are required. The situation is explosive and continues to deteriorate,” De Fazio concluded.
