Rigopiano: second appeal in Perugia set for 10 October

L'Aquila, 18 July (LaPresse) – The second appeal for the Rigopiano tragedy, which caused 29 deaths after an avalanche struck the hotel in Farindola on 18 January 2017, has been set for 10 October. The hearing will take place in the criminal court of the Perugia courthouse at 9 a.m. The Court of Cassation has called on the Court of Perugia to issue a new appeal ruling for some of the defendants. On 3 December, the Sixth Criminal Division of the Court of Cassation overturned the second-instance ruling of the Court of Appeal of L'Aquila, making a new trial necessary for 10 of the defendants, including six managers of the region's civil protection service. The following were acquitted in the first two instances: Carlo Giovani, Carlo Visca, Pierluigi Caputi, Emidio Primavera, Sabatino Belmaggio and Vincenzo Antenucci. The charges of culpable disaster and multiple culpable injuries will have to be assessed. There will also be a new trial for the mayor of Farindola, Ilario Lacchetta, and for the municipal engineer who wrote the report attached to the hotel renovation permit, as well as for two officials from the Province of Pescara, who were convicted in the first and second instances.On appeal in L'Aquila, 22 of the 28 defendants in the case were acquitted of charges of manslaughter, multiple manslaughter, injury, forgery, obstruction of justice and building violations. Three more people were convicted on appeal than in the first instance ruling of 23 February 2023. In the second instance, former prefect Francesco Provolo was acquitted of the charge of obstruction of justice, as were the officials, but he was convicted of ideological falsehood and refusal to perform official duties and sentenced to two years and eight months' imprisonment, a final sentence.
