L'Aquila, 26 July (LaPresse) – A complex night-time rescue operation was launched from Prati di Tivo to save the lives of two mountaineers suspended on Corno Piccolo in the Gran Sasso d'Italia, where they were recovered. The operation, which was challenging to say the least, was carried out by the Abruzzo Mountain Rescue Service and ended at dawn. It was a long and complex operation. A 34-year-old mountaineer from the province of Rome was injured yesterday afternoon while climbing the historic “Spigolo delle guide” route. The alarm was raised at 5 p.m. During the climb, the lead climber made a mistake and fell, breaking several safety devices during the fall and suffering serious injuries to his legs and arms. The second climber suffered burns to his hands while trying to hold the rope to stop his companion from falling. Despite the critical situation, the two climbers managed with great clarity to build a new emergency belay and find shelter on a ledge, from where they raised the alarm.
