Migrants, Sea Watch: ‘Libyan patrol boat fires on our ship’

Rome, 26 September (LaPresse) – ‘A patrol boat belonging to the so-called Libyan coast guard fired on the rescue ship Sea-Watch 5. The attack took place shortly after the Sea-Watch 5 crew had rescued 66 people in distress.’ This was announced in a statement by the NGO Sea Watch itself. "This is the second time in a short period that the so-called Libyan coast guard has fired on civilian rescuers at sea. Just a month ago, militias belonging to the so-called coastguard opened fire on the rescue ship Ocean Viking," the statement continued. The shots were fired by the Libyan patrol boat Corrubia Class 660, which was handed over by Italy to the so-called Libyan coastguard in 2018. Exactly one month ago, the rescue ship Ocean Viking, operated by the organisation SOS Méditerranée, was also targeted by fire from the so-called Libyan coastguard. We call for immediate investigations and serious consequences from Italy and the European Union."
