Cagliari, 17 Nov. (LaPresse) – Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has weighed in on the controversy surrounding migrant centres in Albania, clarifying the figures disputed by the centre-left. ‘Every time we talk about those so-called 800 million, the figure increases. In reality, 620 million are budgeted, not all of which are used because they represent a reserve. And for this year, considering the more limited use of resources, the actual amount is much lower,’ he said on the sidelines of the meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety convened at the prefecture by Prefect Giuseppe Castaldo. The reference is to the criticism levelled in particular by the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, who accused the government of wasting funds on building centres that remained empty, arguing that the executive had diverted law enforcement agencies already struggling with staffing shortages for an operation described as “propaganda”. Piantedosi responded by highlighting the discrepancy between the figures circulated in the political debate and those actually allocated.
