Rome, 30 November (LaPresse) – ‘Always there when the nation calls. Behind every operation, there is one certainty: the safety of Italians is our priority.’ The Chief of Staff of the Army, General C.A. Carmine Masiello, met with the team of specialists from the 8th Folgore Parachute Engineer Regiment engaged in Legnago (VR) in the clearance of a 500-pound aircraft bomb dating back to World War II and recalled the most authentic meaning of the Armed Forces' mission: ‘To be ready to protect life and territory, always. Thanks to you who, every day, step by step, bomb after bomb, make our commitment a reality with your silent and essential work, which restores security to the country.’ Occasional clearance operations of war remnants are vital for the protection of the population and the safeguarding of the national territory. They are conducted throughout Italy at the behest and under the coordination of the Prefect responsible for the area. More than 75 years after the end of the Second World War, the threat of unexploded remnants remains current: 18,253 devices, including 50 aircraft bombs in 2024, and 10,719 devices, including 44 aircraft bombs in 2025. These figures confirm the irreplaceable role of the Italian Army's specialist engineering units.
