Naples, 7 December (LaPresse) – ‘We need a profound and rapid transformation of NATO, turning it into a structure capable of guaranteeing an alliance for world peace, an armed but democratic “arm” of a renewed UN, moving away from its role as an organisation defending only the “Atlantic” West.’ This is according to Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, in an interview with Avvenire. ‘NATO, as it has been perceived for decades, namely as an enemy of the countries of the South, of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, ed.), must instead open up and expand,’ adds Crosetto. "It must think about the world, not just one part of it. And since the UN is no longer able to do so, NATO has the characteristics, know-how and military, but also diplomatic, capabilities to become the true defender of peace. However, it is important to note that only if NATO is credible, reliable, sincere and able to expand will it be able to represent and defend everyone."
