USA: Zuckerberg testifies at trial on social media addiction

Los Angeles (California, USA), 18 February (LaPresse/AP) – Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, will be called to testify in Los Angeles in a landmark trial that accuses social media of causing harm to young users. The plaintiff, now 20, claims that early use of platforms such as Instagram made her addicted and exacerbated her depression and suicidal thoughts. Meta and YouTube are the only two defendants remaining, while TikTok and Snap have reached a settlement. Zuckerberg's testimony comes after that of Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, who denied that people can develop a true addiction to social media, emphasising the platform's commitment to protecting young people. Meta's CEO will have to answer questions about Instagram's algorithm, infinite feeds and other features that lawyers believe are designed to be addictive. The trial is considered a test case, and its outcome could influence thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies. A Meta spokesperson reiterated that the company disputes the allegations and is confident that the evidence will demonstrate its commitment to supporting young people.
