End-of-life: “Libera” has died, the first case in Italy involving an ocular implant

Milan, 25 March (LaPresse) – ‘Libera’, the 55-year-old woman from Tuscany suffering from multiple sclerosis, has died: she passed away today at her home following the self-administration of a lethal drug via an eye-controlled device that had been specially set up by the National Research Council (CNR) to enable the intravenous infusion of the end-of-life medication. This is the first case in Italy to have taken place using the eye-tracking device. ‘Libera’ – recalls the Coscioni Association – is the 14th person in Italy to have had access to medically assisted suicide and the second in Tuscany, supported by the Association. Thanks to the eye-tracking system interfaced with an infusion pump, ‘Libera’ – explains the Association – was in fact able to independently activate the intravenous infusion of the drug, overcoming the obstacle of her spastic tetraparesis, which prevented her from making any movement, including that required to press the activation button on the machine usually used for this procedure.
