Corruption, Busia (ANAC): ‘A phenomenon that has become insidious and elusive over time’

Rome, 21 Apr. (LaPresse) – Corruption is "a phenomenon that has become more insidious and elusive over time, creeping into every nook and cranny of public life. No longer just traditional bribes, but a constellation of underhand practices: from fictitious consultancy contracts to opaque sponsorships, from rigged tenders to the misappropriation of EU funds (up 35% last year, according to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office). At times, it even reaches the highest institutional levels: it does not merely violate the rules, but aims to rewrite them, privatising sovereignty". So said Giuseppe Busia, President of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC), in his speech to Parliament, where the annual report on ANAC’s activities in 2025 is currently being presented. Present at the meeting were the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana.
