Maldives: autopsies performed on Gualtieri and Benedetti, suspected asphyxia

Rome, May 25 (LaPresse) – No decisive elements would appear to have emerged, at least for now, from the first autopsies carried out on the bodies of the five victims of the tragedy that occurred in the Maldives during a scuba diving session. The medico-legal examinations, which began today at the Institute of Legal Medicine of the University of Pavia, would have currently ruled out the presence of any obvious abnormalities, while deferring any conclusions to the histological and toxicological tests ordered by specialists. The procedures are coordinated by forensic pathologist Luca Tajana, appointed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Today autopsies were performed on the bodies of Gianluca Benedetti and Federico Gualtieri, the thirty-year-old from Omegna who died together with the other Italian nationals during the dive in the cave. The examinations on the other three victims, Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal and Muriel Oddenino, are scheduled for tomorrow. The forensic doctors carried out numerous histological samples to determine the possible causes of death, but for the moment the most widely accepted hypothesis remains that of asphyxia and consequent drowning. Professor Tajana will submit the final report within ninety days. The victims’ families’ appointed consultants also took part in the procedures.
