Rome, July 27 (LaPresse) – The reasoning behind Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s opposition to recognizing the State of Palestine, which she calls “counterproductive” at this time, is “absolutely” unconvincing to Elly Schlein.
“It seems to me she’s grasping at straws,” the Democratic Party secretary said in an interview with Repubblica. “What’s ‘counterproductive’ is her total acquiescence to Trump and Netanyahu, but in doing so she betrays our diplomatic tradition, because our country has always been very attentive to the Palestinian issue. If we were in government, we would have already acted like Spain and Ireland, and soon France, and moved to recognize the State of Palestine.”
“So far, they have always remained silent,” Schlein continued speaking about the government, “now concrete actions are needed, such as recognizing Palestine, sanctioning the Netanyahu government, suspending the military cooperation memorandum with Israel, and imposing a total arms embargo. Actions that push for an immediate ceasefire, the unblocking of humanitarian aid, the release of hostages still held by Hamas terrorists — whose fate Netanyahu evidently cares little about — and the end of the illegal occupation.”
