Flotilla, Meloni: ‘Delicate phase, do not insist with irresponsible initiative’

Brussels, 1 October (LaPresse) – ‘I think that in this extremely delicate phase of balance, faced with a possibility that would be historic, insisting on an initiative that, in my opinion, has margins of danger and irresponsibility, I still do not understand it’. This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni upon her arrival at the informal European Council in Copenhagen. "After the appeals made by President Mattarella and others, I have seen what other European leaders are saying, including Spain, which is exactly what Italy is doing. I think that the risk of an initiative that claimed to be born out of humanitarian concerns, but then turned out not to be so, but rather to force a naval blockade – and that is already something else entirely – after all, if it had been a humanitarian issue, the numerous proposals that had been made to deliver aid safely would have been accepted. It seems to me that the issue is something else, but it is taking on incredible proportions at this stage. Because this is a phase in which everyone should understand that exercising responsibility and waiting while peace negotiations are underway is perhaps the most useful thing that can be done to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. But perhaps the suffering of the Palestinian people was not the priority," added the Prime Minister.
