Rome, Nov. 17 (LaPresse) – “Everything that can help Ukraine should be done, because helping Kyiv means helping Europe increase its strategic security; the two are interconnected. By helping Ukraine, we help Europe, and I cannot say much more than that,” said Senate President Ignazio La Russa in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
Despite the domestic debate on aid to Kyiv, La Russa does not see “any risk for the majority, because every time Parliament has had to provide assistance to Ukraine, in the various votes on this issue since the beginning of the war, not only has the entire majority been united, but a large part of the opposition has also voted in favor of the aid. So frankly, I do not see any change coming and I do not see how this situation could be altered. For this reason, I believe the government’s political direction will remain absolutely unchanged.”
For the Senate President, “military aid is certainly useful but not sufficient; it is necessary but not enough, in the sense that Europe must accompany individual aid programs with a much broader political initiative than has been undertaken so far. Precisely because the United States has somewhat reduced its focus on the Ukraine dossier, the European Union should take a step forward with a stronger political initiative than those deployed so far. And of course, this is not a matter for individual countries, but for the entire EU system.”
