Former Ilva, Schlein: “Social disaster, Urso should step aside and Meloni should intervene”

Milan, Nov. 20 (LaPresse) "The situation at the former ILVA is at a critical point, and our first thought must go to the thousands of workers who risk paying the highest price. We are facing a potential social disaster: entire families and already fragile communities could be overwhelmed by the consequences of a crisis that the government has allowed to fester. At this point, Minister Urso must step aside. After months of announcements, denials, and contradictions, it is clear that he is no longer capable of managing such a complex dispute. Giorgia Meloni must take direct political and institutional responsibility for this issue, without further buck-passing, by immediately reopening national negotiations with the trade unions." This was stated in a note by PD secretary Elly Schlein after hearing from the national secretaries of Fiom, Fim, and Uilm, Michele De Palma, Ferdinando Uliano, and Rocco Palombella. "A real, serious, and credible industrial plan is needed immediately, withdrawing the document presented in recent days, which offers no guarantees for the future of the plants and workers. An industrial plan that also addresses and resolves the issue of pollution to protect the health of citizens and the environment. The government must finally take action: it is urgent to set up a state-led industrial consortium that invests the necessary resources, with the involvement of large publicly owned companies, to truly start the decarbonization process, ensure production continuity, and protect jobs. Any further delay would be unacceptable. We are available, as always, to discuss and contribute to finding solutions," added the Democratic Party leader.
