PDL violence against women, Meloni: ‘The law will be passed but it must be well written, it is not a political bargaining chip’

Rome, 27 November (LaPresse) – ‘The law will be passed, but it must be written properly.’ This was the statement made by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in reference to the bill approved on 19 November by the Chamber of Deputies, which introduced the concept of “free and current” consent, without which the crime of sexual violence is committed. The bill is currently stalled in the Senate after the majority expressed concerns about the text. The measure ‘is not something I can decide on my own, it is a parliamentary initiative, not a government one,’ the prime minister said in comments published in Corriere della Sera. However, Meloni argues that the law will ultimately ‘be passed’ due to the need to ‘bring order’ to a matter that is ‘very confusing’ from a legal standpoint. However, things ‘must be done properly, not in a hurry or, worse still, just because there is a non-existent exchange, which I have never done in politics’. The FdI leader points out that there has never been an ‘exchange’ between the centre-left's vote on the law on femicide and the centre-right's vote on the law on consent. Meloni's conviction, however, is that a meeting point will be found, as has happened in the past on similar issues, “because it is good for the country to act in unity”, but – as the occupant of Palazzo Chigi warns – without exploiting a law to “attack me”.
