Justice, Nordio: “After the referendum we will reform the criminal procedure”

Rome, Dec. 20 (LaPresse) – “We are working on the reform of the criminal procedure. Once we have closed the chapter of the referendum, which I hope—as you can imagine—will be confirmatory, we will immediately turn our attention to the criminal procedure, which we want to bring back to its original foundations inspired by a silver medalist of the Resistance, Professor Vassalli.” This was stated by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio while speaking at the ninth congress of Nessuno tocchi Caino, held at the Beccaria prison in Milan. “Certain quotations that I did not make today, also regarding the enforcement of sentences, I do not make not so much out of superstition as because it would be inappropriate,” he added. “But I assure you that we are working on a new Code of Criminal Procedure that emphasizes the aspects of due process guarantees I mentioned earlier: therefore, the presumption of innocence, the certainty of punishment—which must however be humane and not contrary to the sense of humanity—and the rehabilitation of the convicted person.”
