Gaza, Tajani: ‘External support for the Board of Peace? If the text changes, we will discuss it.’

Milan, 24 January (LaPresse) – External support from European countries for the Board of Peace for Gaza? "These are hypothetical times. We need to see when the issues will be addressed. So, it's not an opinion, we need to evaluate it from a legal and political point of view. We'll see. If things change, if there is another text, then we will discuss it. For now, there is a constitutional constraint that prevents us from joining." This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Secretary of Forza Italia, Antonio Tajani, on the sidelines of a FI event on justice in Rome. ‘Article 11 of the Constitution states that Italy can join international organisations if there is equality of conditions among all. Article 9’ of the Board of Peace "does not provide for equality of conditions among all participants. Therefore, as far as we are concerned, it is difficult to overcome the constitutional obstacle. That said, we are always willing to discuss, to talk when it comes to addressing the issue of peace, to work together for peace,‘ he stressed. And, when asked whether the possible involvement of the Italian military in an international stabilisation force for Gaza could unblock the issue of the Board of Peace, Tajani replied: ’These are different things. We have been talking for some time about Italian participation, especially with regard to the training of the future Gaza police force. We are ready to send the Carabinieri, the training could take place in Jordan, and so we are ready to send other Carabinieri for the training of the West Bank police and also the Carabinieri to reinforce Eubam-Rafah. So, to ensure that this European mission can also be reinforced with the presence of our Carabinieri."
