Iran, Meloni: ‘Initiative on Hormuz following the conflict’

Brussels, 20 March (LaPresse) – "We discussed the issue of freedom of navigation, also with reference to what was written in a statement issued today with some other European partners, where clearly, on the one hand, Iran is called upon to guarantee freedom and safety of navigation and, on the other, we offer our readiness, when conditions allow, to lend a hand. Now, I want to be clear on this because it seems to me that there have been some rather forced interpretations." This was stated by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, at a press briefing following the European Council in Brussels. ‘Obviously, no one is thinking of a military mission to break the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. What we are considering is, should the conditions arise – but reasonably speaking in a post-conflict phase – how we can offer our contribution, clearly in agreement with the parties involved, to guarantee and defend freedom of navigation,’ she emphasised.
