Meloni’s lightning visit to the Gulf: a mission for energy security

Rome, 3 April (LaPresse) – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has just arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for an official mission to the Gulf states. Sources at Palazzo Chigi report this, explaining that “this is the first visit to the region by a leader of the EU, G20 and NATO since the start of the conflict, with meetings scheduled with key representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates”. The aim ‘is to strengthen relations with these nations and reaffirm Italy’s support in the face of Iranian attacks, whilst consolidating an increasingly solid strategic partnership’, the same sources add, noting that "the mission also aims to bolster national energy security: the Gulf is, in fact, a crucial source of oil and gas for Italy and plays a decisive role in global energy price trends".
