Mafia: Mattarella says, ‘The Republic pays tribute to Pio La Torre and Rosario Di Salvo’

Rome, 30 April (LaPresse) – "The murder, on 30 April 1982, of Pio La Torre and Rosario Di Salvo highlighted once again the danger posed by organised crime, the enemy of the community. Pio La Torre, who was deeply committed to social issues, also devoted his efforts to the fight against the Mafia. As a Member of Parliament and a member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Mafia phenomenon in Sicily, he made a decisive contribution to the cause of the rule of law, with legislative measures that still form the foundations of the regulatory framework for combating the Mafia today.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the President of the Pio La Torre Centre for Studies and Cultural Initiatives, Emilio Miceli. “The ‘Rognoni-La Torre’ Law was passed in the months following his death and today forms part of the precious civic and ethical legacy which, through initiatives promoted by the Centre named after him, is passed on to younger generations, such as the Anti-Mafia Educational Project, aimed at raising students’ awareness of the issue of the rule of law. On this day of commemoration of Pio La Torre and Rosario Di Salvo, the Republic pays tribute to their memory and their commitment,” concluded the Head of State.
