Australian Open: women's qualifiers, Errani out in second round

Rome, 8 Jan (LaPresse) – There are no more Italian players in the women's qualifiers for the Australian Open 2025. In the Italian night the last one left in the running, the veteran Sara Errani, left the scene. The Italian, number 107 Wta, was in her 17th Australian Open appearance overall (including twelve in the main draw at Melbourne Park, where she reached the quarters in 2012). Last year she reached 50 main draw appearances in singles at the US Open. Among the Italian women only Francesca Schiavone (70), Silvia Farina (53) and Roberta Vinci (52) have played more. Her run in Melbourne started with a comeback victory over Alina Korneeva, world junior number 1 in 2023 when she won the Australian Open and Roland Garros under 18. But in the second round there was nothing for her to do against another very young player, the Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova (Linda's younger sister), No. 197 in the ranking (but she was already No. 87 in August last year). The teenager from Prague won 60 62, in exactly one hour of play, confirming the outcome of her only previous match, played in the first round of the WTA qualifiers in Guadalajara in 2022.
