Former Australian star Fred Stolle dies at 86

Melbourne (Australia), 6 Mar. (LaPresse/AP) – Former Australian tennis star Fred Stolle has died at the age of 86. The announcement was made by the Australian tennis authorities. Craig Tiley, CEO of Tennis Australia, described Stolle as an ‘iconic figure’ in tennis, first as a player and then as a commentator for the Australian Nine Network, CBS and Fox Sports. He recalled that Stolle was part of a historic phase in Australian tennis, which in the 1960s went from being an amateur to a professional sport. ‘His legacy is one of excellence, dedication and a deep love of tennis,’ said Tiley, who did not disclose the cause of death. ’His impact on the sport will be remembered and loved by all who had the privilege of witnessing his contribution. A leading member of the Australian Davis Cup team, Fred made a significant contribution to the sport after his decorated career, as a coach and commentator.’ Stolle is survived by his wife Pat, his son Sandon, a former professional tennis player, and his daughters Monique and Nadine.
