Rome, April 29 (LaPresse) – Real Madrid’s German center-back Toni Rüdiger has been handed a six-match ban by the Spanish sports judiciary. The suspension stems from an incident during last Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, in which Rüdiger was sent off during the chaotic ending of the match – despite having already been substituted – for throwing an object in the direction of the referee.
Meanwhile, the player has undergone surgery for a partial tear of the lateral meniscus in his left leg. The German defender had to leave the pitch in the 111th minute of the Copa del Rey final. He has been dealing with discomfort in both knees due to early-onset osteoarthritis and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.
A return before the end of the season is not ruled out, with the Club World Cup and the Nations League Final Four with Germany on the horizon.
