Giro d’Italia: Australia’s Plapp Wins Stage 8, Ulissi Takes the Pink Jersey

Milan, May 17 (LaPresse) – Australian rider Luke Plapp of Team Jayco AlUla won the 8th stage of the Giro d’Italia, a 197 km route from Giulianova to Castelraimondo, finishing solo. Plapp broke away with less than 50 km to go and crossed the finish line around 40 seconds ahead of his former breakaway companions Wilco Kelderman (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Diego Ulissi (XDS Astana Team). Ulissi also takes over as the new overall leader. The Italian rider from XDS Astana Team capitalized on the delayed arrival of the peloton. He now leads the general classification ahead of teammate Lorenzo Fortunato by +0:12, Slovenian Primoz Roglic of Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe by +0:17, and Spaniard Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates by +0:20.
