Mondiale Club: Rudiger victim of racism, referee activates “X” protocol

Milan, June 23 (LaPresse) – During the controversial incident involving Tony Rüdiger and Gustavo Cabral in the Real Madrid–Pachuca match at the Club World Cup, Brazilian referee Abatti applied for the first time FIFA’s new anti-racism protocol. In response to Rüdiger’s complaints, the referee crossed his arms to form an 'X', symbolizing the 'No Racism Gesture' introduced by the world football governing body in May last year following its 74th Congress in Bangkok. According to the new rules, in cases of racism, the referee may decide to suspend the match after an announcement by the stadium speaker.
