Crystal Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield, the trophy contested between the Premier League winners and the FA Cup winners, a traditional fixture that opens the football season in England. The match, played at Wembley, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation time. The Reds' new signing Ekitike broke the deadlock in the 4th minute, but the Londoners immediately responded with an equaliser from Mateta in the 17th minute from a penalty kick. Liverpool took the lead again in the 21st minute through Frimpong, but Sarr equalised in the 32nd minute of the second half to take the game to penalties. Salah, Mac Allister and Elliott missed for Liverpool, while Eze and Sosa missed for Crystal Palace before Devenny converted to hand the trophy to Crystal Palace.
