Milan, 18 August (LaPresse) Lawyers representing former French international Lassana Diarra have stated that the footballer will seek €65 million (€35 million net) in compensation from FIFA and the Belgian Football Association following his landmark legal victory over transfer rules. Diarra's decade-long challenge to FIFA, following the breakdown of his relationship with his former club, Lokomotiv Moscow, led to a ruling by the European Union's Supreme Court last October that certain aspects of football transfer rules do not comply with the 27-nation bloc's labour and competition laws. Lawyers for the 40-year-old former Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder cited ‘settlement negotiations with FIFA’ in their claim for damages for his entire career. ‘I'm doing this for myself,’ Diarra said. ‘And if I've managed to withstand FIFA's steamroller, it's because I've had a good career. But I've also done it for all the up-and-coming and lesser-known players who don't have the financial and psychological means to challenge FIFA in front of real judges.’
