Rome, 15 September (LaPresse) – Matteo Franzoso's young life came to an end in a clinic in Santiago, Chile. The news was announced by local health officials, who informed the FISI medical commission and the federal president. The 25-year-old Italian athlete did not survive the consequences of a head injury and subsequent cerebral oedema, which occurred after a fall on Saturday during training on the La Parva slope, 50 km from the Chilean capital. Franzoso, who would have turned 26 on 16 September, attempted the first small jump on the training course and was thrown forward into the nets. He passed through two rows of nets and crashed into the fence located 6-7 metres outside the track. Reached immediately by helicopter rescue, the Italian athlete from the Fiamme Gialle, who grew up skiing in Sestriere, was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit and placed in a medically induced coma. As the hours passed, however, Franzoso's body was unable to withstand the damage caused by the trauma.
