Tennis, ATP ranking: Sinner and Musetti in Top 5, historic day for Italy

Milan, Jan 12 (LaPresse) – Historic day for Italian tennis, which for the first time can boast two players simultaneously among the world’s top five, Jannik Sinner (2) and Lorenzo Musetti (5). This had never happened before or after 1973, the milestone year marking the advent of the computerized ATP ranking. Thanks to the final reached in Hong Kong, despite the defeat, Lorenzo Musetti climbed two positions to number 5, becoming the fourth Italian with the best career ranking ever. Ahead of him are only Jannik Sinner, the first Italian world number 1 who held the top spot for 66 weeks; Nicola Pietrangeli, considered world number 3 in 1959 and 1960, the years of his singles triumphs at Roland Garros; and Adriano Panatta, who reached a maximum of fourth place in the ATP ranking. In the week of the Australian Open draw, Italy can boast four players among the top 30, who will thus be seeded in the first Slam of the season. In addition to Sinner and Musetti, there are Flavio Cobolli (22), who has started training in Melbourne, and Luciano Darderi (24), competing this week in singles and doubles at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. After the success in Hong Kong, Alexander Bublik debuts in the Top Ten. Big leap forward also for Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Stan Wawrinka in the men’s singles final then won by Poland over Switzerland. The Polish player, returning after a long injury, rises from number 83 to 53 in the ranking.
