Milan, 23 March (LaPresse) – “We are at a particular stage of the season; at the moment we are deservedly top of the table with a six-point lead, a result we might not even have predicted, and we are in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. I would say we have achieved two out of three objectives; in the Champions League we could have done better, but there are also the opponents – sometimes they are unpredictable, underestimated – so clearly we were knocked out.” So said Inter president Beppe Marotta, speaking on the sidelines of the Serie A League meeting in Milan regarding the Nerazzurri’s current form in the league. “As for the league, I’d say there are eight matchdays left, and we have a two-point lead. We’re in a difficult situation, a dip in form perhaps linked to injuries, perhaps to fatigue stemming from a heavy run of fixtures, but this is something our opponents are going through too, so I’m not here to make excuses, other than to say we’ll fight it out to the very end with calm and the knowledge that we’re still six points clear of second place,” he added. For Marotta, “the manager, who is the leader of the group, is best placed to assess the situation; he will analyse it thoroughly with his staff, but this is by no means a drama,” he said. "We’re facing a difficult situation, as sport often shows us. But it was absolutely unthinkable for me to be here today, with eight matchdays to go, and say that we’re six points clear. We mustn’t get complacent; we know the difficulties exist. We know that in certain circumstances—as I said last week—it’s easier to be the hunter than the hare, because clearly in this case our opponents’ strength multiplies, and we must be better at handling this transitional period,” explained Marotta. ‘But I have to be optimistic; I know the team is a strong one, I know we’re dealing with professionals who do their job to the best of their ability, and now it’s a matter of finding the path we’ve temporarily lost,’ concluded Marotta.
