Football: Messi suffers muscle strain, World Cup not at risk

Milan, 26 May (LaPresse) – Argentina breathes a sigh of relief: Lionel Messi’s injury sustained whilst playing for Inter Miami is less serious than expected and should not rule him out of the World Cup, which kicks off on 11 June in the US, Mexico and Canada. The American MLS club itself announced that Messi underwent tests on Monday, almost certainly an MRI scan, although the team did not reveal which procedures were carried out, and the final diagnosis was ‘strain associated with muscle fatigue in the left hamstring’. “The timing of his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress,” Inter Miami added in a statement. Argentina has two friendlies scheduled before the World Cup: the first on 6 June in College Station, Texas, against Honduras, and the second on 9 June in Auburn, Alabama, against Iceland. The South American side are in World Cup Group J and will make their debut on 16 June against Algeria in Kansas City; they will then face Austria in Arlington, Texas, on 22 June; and Jordan, again in Arlington, on 27 June. Messi is set to play in his sixth World Cup.
