Stadiums, Malagò: ‘Italy is paying for a long-standing shortfall’

Milan, 29 May (LaPresse) – “There is a long-standing shortfall in Italian stadiums that we have been grappling with for many years. Every government over the past few decades has been fully aware of this issue.” This was stated by Giovanni Malagò during an appearance on ‘Ping Pong’ on Rai Radio1. ‘In the 1990s and early 2000s, when Italian football was the most competitive in the world, many clubs preferred to invest in one or two extra players rather than planning infrastructure investments. They focused on the short term rather than the medium to long term: that was a mistake,’ he explained. According to Malagò, “in our country, sports infrastructure is built when there is an obligation to do so because a commitment has been made to host a major sporting event. It is in those cases that a very strong acceleration is set in motion. I hope this can also happen in the run-up to the 2032 European Championships, even though there is still a lot of work to be done and time is short.”
