Washington (USA), 16 Jan (LaPresse) – ‘Believing in the idea of America means respecting the institutions that govern a free society’. That was one of the first messages delivered by outgoing US President Joe Biden in his farewell message to the nation from the Oval Office of the White House. In his speech, Biden issued a ‘warning’ to Americans. ‘My great concern,’ he said, is the risk of ’abuses of power.’ The outgoing president did not quote Donald Trump directly, but emphasised how he has been advocating a ‘peaceful transition of power’. Biden then focused on various topics, such as misinformation that ‘buries Americans’, the fight against climate change, which is threatened by ‘powerful forces’, and finally also applauded his administration with regard to the agreement reached in Gaza between Israel and Hamas: ‘The agreement for Gaza was negotiated by my administration’, but ‘will be implemented by the next administration, which has been constantly informed’.
