Albania: Government decides to close TikTok for 12 months

Tirana (Albania), 6 Mar (LaPresse) – Albania's government has decided on a 12-month closure of TikTok, accusing the video-sharing platform of inciting violence and bullying, especially among children. Albania's Education Minister, Ogerta Manastirliu, said she was in contact with TikTok to install filters such as parental control and the inclusion of the Albanian language in the app. The authorities conducted 1,300 meetings with about 65,000 parents, who ‘recommended and were in favour of closing or restricting the TikTok platform’, the minister said. The Cabinet had initiated the procedure last year after a teenager stabbed another teenager to death in November, following an argument that started on TikTok. The platform currently did not respond to a request for comment on the government's decision.
