Ukraine: EU summit drafts opening to Slovakia on gas transit

Brussels, 6 Mar (LaPresse) – ‘The European Council invites the Commission, Slovakia and Ukraine to intensify their efforts to find viable solutions to the issue of gas transit, including through its resumption’. This was stated in the latest draft of today's European Council conclusions, agreed at this morning's Coreper. The ambassadors of the 27 added this point, which was not present in the previous draft. In recent days, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had appealed for the resumption of gas transit to Slovakia via Ukraine, after the flow was interrupted by Kiev at the beginning of the year. The move should serve to drop Bratislava's veto threat, while it remains to be seen what position the Hungarian premier, Viktor Orban, will take.
