Syria, Damascus signs agreement with Kurds: ceasefire and integration into the State

Damascus (Syria), 10th Mar. (LaPresse/AP) – The Syrian central government has reached an agreement with the Kurdish-led authority that controls the north-east of the country. The agreement provides for a ceasefire and the merging of the main US-backed force into the Syrian army. The agreement was signed by interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, and will be implemented by the end of the year: it will bring all the border crossings with Iraq and Turkey in the north-east, the airports and the oil fields under the control of the central government in Damascus. In exchange, the Syrian Kurds will obtain rights, including the right to teach and use their language, rights that were forbidden for decades under the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.
