Brussels, March 20 (LaPresse) – "The Commission is closely monitoring the situation in Hungary and recalls the importance of upholding the Charter of Fundamental Rights, including the right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, and the principle of non-discrimination against any group of the population. The Commission will not hesitate to act where appropriate." This was stated to LaPresse by a spokesperson for the European Commission, when asked about the Hungarian government's ban on the Gay Pride.
"We stand with the LGBTIQ community, in Hungary and all Member States," the spokesperson emphasized. "As announced in the Commission’s 2025 work program, the Commission will present a new post-2025 LGBTIQ equality strategy by the end of this year. This strategy will build on the significant efforts already made within the framework of the 2020-2025 LGBTIQ Equality Strategy. The Commission will continue to closely monitor the situation of LGBTIQ people across the Union," the spokesperson reiterated, "our Union is a Union of freedom and equality. Everyone should be able to be themselves, live, and love freely. The right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental right that must be upheld throughout the European Union. It is enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and is a key element of our vibrant democracies."
